HFN commends federal government’s subsidy on kidney dialysis

The Healthcare Federation of Nigeria (HFN) has welcomed the Federal Government’s decision to subsidise kidney dialysis treatment across federal medical centres and teaching hospitals nationwide.

The initiative, approved under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, reduces the cost of dialysis sessions from about ₦50,000 to ₦12,000 in designated public facilities. The intervention is part of the government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which seeks to expand access to healthcare and address the growing burden of non-communicable diseases.

According to the HFN, the subsidy will ease the financial strain on Nigerians living with kidney disease, many of whom require dialysis several times each week to survive. The Federation noted that high treatment costs had forced many families into financial hardship, while some patients had been unable to continue care.

Njide Ndili, President of HFN, said: “This bold intervention by the Federal Government brings much-needed relief to thousands of Nigerians living with kidney disease. It is not only life-saving but also a clear demonstration of the administration’s commitment to making healthcare more accessible and equitable. At HFN, we see this as a pivotal moment to strengthen collaboration between the public and private sectors. We stand ready to partner with the government in ensuring the sustainability of this subsidy, while driving innovation and improving outcomes for patients nationwide.”

HFN, which serves as an umbrella body for private sector stakeholders in Nigeria’s health system, said the initiative offers an opportunity to deepen collaboration between public and private providers. It stressed that sustainable progress would depend on pooled resources, expertise, and innovation to widen access and improve quality of care.

The Federation also urged the government to ensure timely release of funds, transparency in implementation, and structured engagement with private facilities. This, it said, would help guarantee that the subsidy delivers practical relief to patients across the country.

HFN reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for policies that strengthen Nigeria’s health system, support sustainable financing, and integrate private sector contributions into national health priorities.
